Native American Music

We have been studying Aerophones in class. We know that an aerophone is any instrument that uses air to produce a sound or tone. That means that a Native American flute is an Aerophone. Since it is made of wood, it is a Woodwind.

R Carlos Nakai

R Carlos Nakai is one of our FAVORITE musicians at Northwoods!

Did you know...
-He is both Navajo and Ute.
-He was born in Arizona.
-He learned to play the trumpet in school.
-He graduated from High School and then joined the US Navy.
-He played trumpet in the Navy Band.
-He was injured in an accident which made him unable to play the trumpet anymore. This was when he learned to play the flute.
-He earned a degree in Music from Northern Arizona University.
-He likes to mix Native Flute sounds with instruments and sounds from other countries.

Aerophones

 Today in Music we are studying AEROPHONES.

Aerophones are instruments that use wind or air to make the sound.

That means that Woodwind Instruments like the Flute and Clarinet are Aerophones.

It also means that Brass Instruments like the Trumpet and Trombone are Aerophones.

We play Aerophone instruments in class sometimes can you think of two we play?

-Recorders and Kazoo
